By default, all Verizon cell phones only display the phone number of the caller on the caller ID. Verizon land line phones display the name of the person associated with the account. If you'd rather have your name appear, you want your name and number to be blocked completely or you'd like another type of identification on your outgoing calls, you'll need to talk with Verizon customer service directly. As long as the phone plan is in your name, you'll be able to change the way your name appears on another person's phone when you make outgoing calls.
Default Name and Number
Unless you call and request differently, Verizon automatically enters your phone number as the caller ID for your cell phone device. For some who have paid $1.99 per month for the service, the phone number is also accompanied by the region in which you live. For instance, if you live in New York and you call a person, by default the caller ID might display either '555-555-5555' or 'New York Call 555-555-5555.' If you have a Verizon land line, the information displayed on caller ID is typically the name associated with the account.
Changing Your ID
If you'd prefer another name or identification to be displayed when you call, contact Verizon customer service at (800) 922-0204. When you reach an agent, indicate that you'd like to change the way your caller ID is displayed. As long as you are the primary name on the account and can answer a few basic questions concerning that account, you'll be able to request an ID change to your name or even to a private or restricted number if you prefer.
Contact Lists
While you can change the way your identification appears on most phones, if a friend or family member has you entered into her contact list, she'll always see the name she's entered when she receives a call from your number. You cannot change the way she sees your identification if you already have a name or nickname saved in her phone, as the phone will default to the predefined entry on her phone.
Blocking Your ID
If you want to make a phone call where you block your identification on the recipient's caller ID, Verizon has a code that allows you to obscure your ID for one call. If you'd rather your number or ID stay hidden, press '*67' before dialing the phone number. This will cause your call to appear as 'restricted' or 'private' on the recipient's phone and works on both wireless and land lines. If you always want your ID to stay private, contact Verizon customer service or, if you're a Verizon mobile user, go online to My Verizon and activate the 'Caller ID Blocking' feature under the 'Add/change features' section.
